Reconciliation ran monthly and compared totals. A break that started on the third of the month surfaced on the first of the next one, by which point the cause was buried under four weeks of writes.

Line telemetry was written straight into the reporting tables. Duplicate messages inflated output figures, and a network drop left gaps nobody noticed until a plant manager questioned a shift total.

Demographic data existed as national tables and raster files. Answering "how many people live inside this shape" meant a GIS specialist, a desktop tool and a manual export, so a question that took a customer ten seconds to ask took days to answer — and could not be sold as a product.

an industry safety-certification body
Safety training records for an industry standard lived with the training providers who issued them. An employer hiring a technician had no single place to check whether a certificate was real, current, or had been withdrawn — and the body that owned the standard had no way to correct a record once it was out.

a professional network and jobs platform
A professional network needs three things that pull against each other: profiles rich enough to be worth searching, search fast enough to feel instant, and messaging immediate enough that people come back. Built naively, each one degrades the others — richer profiles slow the search, and polling for messages hammers the same database the search runs on.
